WORKSHOPS FOR CLINICIANS
Attachment Based - Cognitive Behavioral Systemic Therapy:
This workshop focuses on how to integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and Structural-Strategic Family Therapy. I discuss the four major tenets of AB-CBST: all change is cognitive, adding systemic work improves outcomes and decreases relapse, attachment is the way that we relate to self, other, and the world, and attachment between therapist and client is the best predictor of outcome. This integrative approach is then discussed in its application to a family with a child with ADHD addressing child and adult issues in treatment.
Assessment and Treatment of ADHD in Adults and Adolescents:
In this workshop, I review how to assess and diagnose ADHD and discuss evidence based treatments for working with adults, children, and adolescents with ADHD. I review behavioral interventions, cognitive interventions, couples interventions using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and family interventions using Structural-Strategic Family therapy approaches. This workshop provides practical tools for therapists to use with their clients, as well as a framework for integrating their particular approaches with evidence based principals to help their clients with ADHD. I have presented this workshop for hospital grand rounds, professional organizations, and in other trainings for therapists.
Introduction to Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT):
This workshop is an overview of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an evidence-based approach to working with couples. Originally presented for the interns at the Haight Ashbury Psychological Services, I have developed it to be presented in a 2 hour format. We discuss the theoretical groundings of EFT, techniques, and watch Sue Johnson having a first session with a couple.

Engaging Families in Therapy When Working in Schools:
In this workshop, I discussed the importance of engaging families when working with high school students and discuss tips and tools to engage families, as well as an overview of what to do when they come in. The model discussed is brief, as many school counselors may have limited contact with parents, so making every meeting count is important. This was originally presented as a treating method for the SF Unified School District Wellness Counselors.

Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Workshop and One Way Mirror Training:
In this 6 hour workshop, I review the theoretical basis of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy using the ABC model. We discuss the evolution of CBT, "third wave" approaches, and how to integrate other theories, such as Narrative Therapy, Gestalt, Emotionally Focused Therapy, EMDR, Structural-Strategic, and Solution Focused. We then discuss various techniques, using the B.E.A.S.T. five factor model (biological, emotion, action, situation, thought) to organize the techniques, with an emphasis on behavioral interventions (e.g., hierarchy, interoceptive exposure, behavioral activation) and cognitive interventions. Participants will have a chance to practice mindfulness exercises, interoceptive exposure exercises, and cognitive therapy Gestalt exercises. We then discuss my general protocol for integrating these approaches, and then review evidence based protocols for treating trauma, depression, generalized anxiety, OCD, ADHD, eating disorders, and panic disorder.

Integrated Emotionally Focused Co Therapy Workshop and One Way Mirror Training:
In this 6 hour workshop, I review the research around the need for couples therapy, the theoretical grounding of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and then watch a video of Sue Johnson doing Stage 1 work. We then discuss the techniques of EFT, review a Stage 2 Withdrawer Reengagement video and Stage 2 Pursuer Softening video, and the role play tracking the cycle. We review the history of couples therapy, Gottman Method Couples Therapy theory and techniques, and other helpful ideas from other couples and sex therapy approaches. We discuss how to work with individual issues within a couples context by integrating CBT and/or EMDR with EFT to treat ADHD, OCD, panic disorder, trauma, and/or substance abuse.

Introduction to Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR):
This workshop can be a 2 hour overview or a 6 hour workshop with a live demonstration and time for participants to practice. In the first two hours, we discuss the EMDR theory and the theory of trauma, the protocol for installing resources and conducting the EMDR, as well as reviewing cognitive interweaves, working with dissociation, and how to assess to determine whether the client and therapist are prepared for EMDR therapy. In the 6 hour version, a participant volunteers and I demonstrate EMDR with them, then the other participants pair off and practice with each other.

Introduction to Motivational Interviewing:
This 2 hour workshop introduces the evidence-based approach of Motivational Interviewing that has been found to increase engagement, strengthen the therapeutic relationship, and help people to make changes in their life in a variety of areas such as substance abuse, eating issues, emotional issues, and others. In this workshop, we discuss the theoretical groundings and research on Motivational Interviewing and the techniques for eliciting change talk. We watch two videos, one exemplifying the OARS skills and one exemplifying the DARN CAT acronym to identify preparation and change talk. Participants will have opportunities to role play during the workshop to experience using the skills and being interviewed by someone using the skills.

Substance Abuse Counseling with Adolescents:
In this 2 hour workshop, I review the evidence based approaches to working with adolescents with substance abuse issues, and discuss my four stage approach where I work with the adolescent and their families, integrating evidence based principals. The first stage is the Assessment, the second stage is Preparation, which involves parent coaching, affect regulation for parent and child, introduction of CBT and motivational interviewing for the teen, then move into the third stage, which is Behavioral Interventions. I discuss creating a clear contract for use and a path towards greater freedom with less use, no use, or a higher level of care if continued use. We then move to the fourth stage, the Attachment stage, which is focused on the relationship between the adolescent and parent, creating a strong bond for parents to be able to care for their adolescent, while at the same time providing safe limits.

Treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Adolescents Using Exposure with Response Prevention and Family Therapy:
In this 2 hour workshop, I review the evidence based approaches for using Exposure with Response Prevention for treating OCD. We discuss what OCD is and discuss the practical tools to treat it. We discuss how to explain OCD to adolescents and families, how to work with an adolescent to externalize OCD, and work together to map the effects of OCD and create an exposure hierarchy. In this presentation we discuss Exposure with Response Prevention and watch video clips of E/RP in action. I discuss my integrative approach using a transdiagnostic approach to working with families called Evolving Structural-Strategic Family Therapy. We discuss the four stages of ESSFT and how to apply it with an adolescent with OCD and discuss a case example. Depending on the amount of time, we may also practice creating exposure hierarchies and discuss specific cases.

Self Harm & Suicide
In this 2 hour workshop, I address non suicidal self injury, suicidal ideation, and suicidal actions. We look at the research on the age of onset of self harm, and discuss the function of harming as this is central in understanding for treatment. We explore suicidal thinking and how it can become a method of coping. We look at the statistics related to suicide, and the factors to assess when assessing suicide risk. We then discuss the evidence based approaches to treating NSSI and suicide, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Attachment Based Family Therapy for Depressed Adolescents (ABFT), Safety Planning, and the Four Function Model.

Utilizing the Family in Helping Children and Adolescent to Overcome Anxiety
In this 2 hour workshop, I discuss the nature of anxiety, evidence based treatments for anxiety, and how to work with families to create systemic change to prevent relapse. We discuss how avoidance maintains anxiety, and how families may reinforce anxiety inadvertently when trying to help their child or adolescent. We review Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) treatments for anxiety disorders, and discuss Exposure Therapy and Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP). We discuss how to help families learn the CBT and exposure techniques to reinforce the treatment at home, and vicariously apply the techniques to their own anxiety if the parent also struggles with an anxiety disorder.
